Have you wondered what it means to be Methodist? Are you interested in growing in your faith? We offer multiple New Member/Inquirer Classes where we will explore each of these questions. While the classes are more directed toward new folks who are considering membership here at Salem UMC, anyone is welcome to come and participate in this class. We will make an announcement prior to all new member class dates. Please contact Pastor Warner at the church email@example.com to sign-up for a class. Hope to see you there!
BECOMING A MEMBER OF SALEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Becoming a member of a church is a way that we identify with other people who have committed themselves living as a follower of Jesus. We accept everyone and anyone who wishes to commit to their faith and find a permanent church home. Joining is a commitment to a lifetime of learning and growing in our relationships with God and with one another. If you are someone who is considering the possibility of becoming a member of Memorial Salem UM Church, we hope that the following list of Frequently Asked Questions will help you get a better sense of what is involved with joining our church.
How can I join the church?
1) Profession of Faith and Baptism. This is when a person is making their first public, adult profession of faith in Christ as Lord and Savior. This does not necessarily mean that you are just becoming a believer at the time, but that you are now making your decision public, requesting baptism and membership.
2) Transfer Letter. Are you already a member of another church, and wanting to move your membership to our church? Contact your current church for a letter of transfer. Need help? Feel free to contact us as well!
What is the process to join the church?
That’s easy. We just present you to the congregation in the worship service of your choice, and have the congregation affirm your decision. We will have you fill out a small form with your contact information and will also ask to take your picture for our newsletter.
Why become a member?
There are several very important reasons to join as a member as opposed to simply being a regular attendee. First, it can be a very meaningful time in which you and the congregation make a commitment to each other. It’s very meaningful for the congregation to officially accept someone new into the family, and it’s usually meaningful for the individual to be the recipient of this acceptance and affirmation. Of course, if you are making a first-time profession of faith, your public baptism is an extremely important time for you, your family, and the church. Secondly, you will come under the pastoral care of this church. You will receive our newsletters and communications, and part of our commitment to you is that we will do everything possible to support you in your time of emotional, spiritual, or financial need. And third, joining is simply that important “rite of passage” that signifies your entrance into our church, and let’s our congregation welcome you in an appropriate way.
Am I expected to join after attending worship services for a certain length of time?
No. Our Pastor or other members might bring up the question, but there will be no pressure whatsoever. Visitors and others are always welcome to come and worship without any expectations to become a full member. We will be happy to have you either way and will be ready if you choose to become a member!
Are members expected to give financially?
Typically, yes, but there is no requirement to do so. As a new member you will be given a pack of offering envelopes annually that will last you all year. Your regular financial support as a member is beneficial to the church, as well as being a very biblical way of showing your commitment to Christ and His Church. We encourage people to give at their own pace.
What is expected of me after I join?
We encourage every new member to find a group, ministry and/or program to get involved with in the church. Get involved with your new church family! You will find your membership here much more fulfilling if you establish healthy relationships with the community. You can find a place where to use your God-given gifts to build up and support our ministries.
I think I’m ready to join. What should I do?
Consider signing up for a new members class, or scheduling a meeting with the Pastor. Set up an appointment with our Pastor by contacting the Church Office at (570-366-0201) or firstname.lastname@example.org This will give us the opportunity to sit down and talk with you, get to know more about you, and answer your questions. We will also confirm a date for you to come forward and join in the worship service of your choice (8:45 am / 10:45 am).
